How to Make a Water Powered Flashlight

Prepare the tools & materials

Home: Headliner

• PVC Pipe 4" Long (3/4"‎Ø)  •PVC Coupling 3/4" to 1" •Recycled 3xLED Torch •Toroidal Core/ Bead  [Recycled From CFL Bulb]
• 2N3904 Gen. Purpose NPN Transistor •1K Ohm Resistor (1/4w) • Cooper & Zinc Strip • Magnet Wire/ Copper Wire
• 4 Sheets Of Tissue Paper •2x2" Sheet of Acetate •
Leatherman MultiTool •Soldering Iron •Hot GlueGun •Teflon Tape •Super Glue

STEP 1: Build the

Power Cell

The power cell can be created by wrapping the 3rd sheets of toilet paper to the copper. Then roll the zinc strip until you reach the 5th sheets. Tie the power cell with copper wire to prevent the tissue from tearing when it gets wet. Take a pulley that will fit on the PVC Coupling. Puncture two holes for the metal strips to fit in. Insert the strips in the holes and seal with superglue.

STEP 3: Combine

the Power Cell

and Joule Thief

Solder the wires of the power cell and joule thief. Then superglue around the coupling. Superglue the LED's reflector and the coupling.

STEP 2: Create the

Joule Thief

There is a full tutorial by ASCAS on how to make a simple joule thief. This circuit is more compact, the transistor is below the LED's board while the toroidal core was glued above. How to make a simple joule thief

STEP 4: Assemble the

Water Storage Cylinder

Glue a small piece of acetate onto the PVC pipe, it allows you to see if there's still water in the flashlight.

STEP 5: Add water

Fill the pipe with tap water. You can use tap water or salt water. Salt water will longer since it has more electrolytes than tap water. Tap water won't last more than 30 minutes whle salt water will last for up to 2 hours.
